Abstract

A laboratory study was conducted to identify the key properties of phosphinocarboxylic acid polymers in controlling boiler water deposits, including their ability to transport iron; disperse boiler water sludge containing iron oxide, silica, and calcium phosphate; and dissolve deposits. The thermal and hydrolytic stability of the polymers was investigated and autoclave studies up to 1,500 psig. Performance testing showed their inherent thermal stability make phosphinocarboxylic acid polymers effective in maintaining deposit control in a boiler.

Conclusion

The thermal and hydrolytic properties make PCA polymers ideally suited for use in boiler water treatment programs up to 1,500 psig.

Laboratory studies under boiler water conditions showed PCA to have excellent dispersancy, iron transport, and dissolution properties.

PCA polymers give total inorganic deposition control due to their multifunctional properties in a boiler.
